GRAND ETHIOPIAN RENAISSANCE DAM (THE ABAY DAM) .
Ethiopia has been one of the poorest countries in the World. Above all, the population explosion is amazing. The population of Ethiopia is currently 91 million and Ethiopia is the 13th largest country in the World in terms of population. (See The World Fact Book, July, 2011). Since Ethiopia has the 8th fastest population growth rate in the World, the population of Ethiopia will reach 200 million people in just 25 years, becoming the 9th largest country in the World, surpassing Russia and other countries. This being the case, one of the ways to tackle population explosion is through economic development as in the case of China and India and the Abay Dam is one of the major sources of economic development.
However, because of the pressure of some of the countries in the World who are opposing the construction of the Abay Dam, the International Organizations like the World Bank and bilateral sources like U.S. and European Countries are not helping Ethiopia with loans and grants to build the Abay Dam. Therefore, Ethiopians have to build the Abay Dam by themselves. At this time, less than 20% of the Ethiopian people have access to electricity. But, with the help of the Abay Dam, and the Dams to be built in the near future, not only Ethiopia will be able to satisfy the needs of all Ethiopians, expand the manufacturing and other related industries locally among other things, but also export electric power and earn foreign currency and be able to import whatever Ethiopia needs to accelerate its economic development.
During the brief occupation of major Cities and Towns of Ethiopia by the Italians between 1935 and 1941 while the Ethiopians were fighting to take back the occupied Cities and Towns, even the Fascist, Mussolini, was building roads in Ethiopia and Ethiopians are still using those roads. Emperor Haile Selassie and later Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam built some roads and other infrastructures that the Ethiopian People are still using. Similarly, Ethiopians will be using the Abay Dam even after the current Government is gone. Therefore, it does not really matter whether the current Government or another Government builds the Abay Dam since Ethiopia will benefit from the Dam for a long time to come regardless of who builds the Abay Dam. This being the case, all Ethiopians should be united in supporting the Abay Dam including the Opposition Forces in Diaspora since Abay Dam benefits Ethiopia.
Above all, by buying bonds, not only we will help Ethiopia, we will also get back our money with interest in just few years. In that regard, since the bond is guaranteed by the Ethiopian Government, we will definitely get back our money with interest, regardless of whether we are opposing or supporting the Ethiopian Government. Therefore, even if some of us are opposing the Ethiopian Government, there is no reason for not participating in such a noble cause that benefits our beloved Ethiopia.
